Boys Soccer: For the second straight year, Class 1A All-State First Team honors went to 2008 Columbia High co-captains Lazaro (Chuy) Ramos and Cheno Barajas.
Ramos, the two-time SWW 1A League defensive player of the year, and Barajas, a midfielder and CHS's top playmaker, led Columbia High to its first soccer Final Four (and the third-place trophy) and a school single-season record for victories (18 versus two losses).
Named to the 1A All-State Second Team from Columbia High were forward Mart¡n Mendoza, the team's leading goal scorer in 2008, and defensive standout Ramon Cortez.
Action Sports: A new--and what organizers hope is an improved--version of the Gorge Games will run July 17-20 at venues in the host city of Hood River and throughout the mid-Columbia region.
The 2008 Gorge Games will feature competitions in nine action sports, including adventure racing, kayaking, kiteboarding, mountain biking, riverboarding and windsurfing, and nearly 30 events over four days.
Moreover, an Adventure Village in Hood River will serve as a hub of activity for athletes, volunteers and spectators alike. Attractions will include live performances by some of the region's top musical acts and bands, interactive competitions and social events.
For more information, including how to volunteer or purchase tickets, visit the official Gorge Games Web site, gorgegames.net.
Football: Former Columbia High standouts Erick Viramontes and Taylor Champion will play for the East squad in this Saturday's sixth annual Freedom Bowl Classic in Vancouver.
The all-star football game featuring 2008 high school graduates from Southwest Washington will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Columbia River High School, 800 NW 99th St.
Besides being a showcase for the region's top football talent, the game is a fundraiser for the Shriners Hospital for Children. Tickets at $8 per can be purchased on game day at the gate.
Viramontes starred for Columbia High as an offensive tackle and a defensive end, while Champion, a running back, set CHS's single-season rushing record in 2007 with 1,837 yards.
Ultimate Frisbee: Gorge Ultimate Frisbee is now registering players of all skill levels for an eight-week adult co-ed summer league.
Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact game that combines the continuous movement and athleticism of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football. Games will be played Wednesday nights starting at 5:30 in Hood River.
Cost per player to join the league is $25 and includes a new Gorge Ultimate disc. The deadline to register is July 14.
